Karen Tham is a skilled and experienced masterplanner and architect with over 28 years of international working experience from practicing in Boston, San Francisco, Hong Kong and Singapore. She was responsible for the successful delivery of a wide range of master planning, urban design, landscape architecture, design and development guidelines and architecture projects for a diverse client base in the public and private sectors.
Her expertise extends from concept design to implementation, and project management of large scale and complex projects involving multidisciplinary teams. She led the design and implementation of prominent projects such as the Singapore Sports Hub and HDB Smart Urban Habitat Master Plan and Jurong Innovation District as well as designed and planned for sustainable eco-tourism destinations in tropical rainforest environments throughout SE Asia.
Karen has excellent technical knowledge in masterplanning, urban design, architecture and landscape design, as well as strong understanding of related disciplines, such as economics, environmental engineering, infrastructure, civil and building engineering and transportation planning. As a strong advocate for sustainable design solutions, she has designed and implemented projects with water sensitive urban design and storm water management strategies and was involved in projects that achieved Singapore Green Mark Platinum accreditation and USGBC LEED accreditation.
Karen is a licensed Architect in the USA and certified Planner with the American Institute of Certified Planners, USGBC LEED Accredited Professional, certified Green Mark Manager in Singapore, council member of the Singapore Institute of Planners and member of the Hong Kong Institute of Urban Design. She holds a Master of City Planning from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA, and a Bachelor of Architecture from University of Oregon, USA.
Chen Hong leads the Master Planning and Urban Design division of RSP as Director. She brings more than 25 years of comprehensive expertise in master planning, urban design, as well as architectural design across a variety of project types including educational, institutional, office, hospitality, infrastructure and residential. In her experience working on various large-scale planning projects in China, she collaborates closely with all stakeholders to resolve challenges to a project’s implementation and bring fresh perspectives to planning projects.
Previously part of the Hangzhou Qianjiang New CBD Construction & Management Committee, she oversaw all planning works, including underground plan and implementation, and design review of public and private investment projects in Hangzhou CBD. She also led research on design guidelines and policies of green building and urban design, with a strong focus on creating integrated vertical pedestrian systems and vibrant public spaces.
Chen Hong is a Member of the Singapore Institute of Planners and holds a Certificate of Senior Architect (China). She is also a National Registered Architect and Urban Planner (China). She has a Bachelor’s Degree of Engineering in the Specialty of Architecture from Taiyuan University of Technology, and a Master of Arts in Urban Design, School of Design & Environment from National University of Singapore. She was also a master-level visiting scholar in urban planning at University of Illinois in Chicago, USA.
